Players of the upcoming Thief title will become Master Thief Garrett, as developer Eidos Montreal has taken great care in improving the movement system and making it stand out from the complex mechanics of previous games in the series.

Thief games in the past have delivered some really impressive pure stealth experiences, but the movement systems weren't exactly the easiest to comprehend, leading to many giving up on the franchise.

For the upcoming reboot, developer Eidos Montreal took a good look at the past titles and tried to figure out what made sense in the gaming industry nowadays, according to Director Nicolas Cantin, who talked with VG247.

"Technology has advanced. I played through the previous games not too long ago actually. You see a lot of things that are not acceptable today, to gamers," he said. "Thief was really our main reference. We wanted to keep the main pillar. But we wanted to deliver a new experience, something for the modern public, but that also that would please the fans. This was a good challenge we had."

Thanks to improvements in terms of controls and of general mechanics, Eidos Montreal was able to really improve upon the movement system and make players feel like they're becoming Garrett, not just controlling him throughout the game.

"The technology now gives us all these utilities. We want you to become the character. You become Garrett. We put a lot of personality in his hands, the way he’s moving. So it’s not only generic movement. It’s how we define the character. We don’t want you to play Garrett. We want you to be Garrett."

"We put a lot of effort into those details because this is also one of the big differences between the game of today and the game of the past."

The new Thief title is out at the end of the month on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms.
