Thecus, a company well renowned for its high-performance NAS solutions, has just announced the introduction of a new 3U rack mount 16-bay network storage solution which is powered by a high-end quad-core Intel Xeon X3480 processor.

The Intel Xeon X3480 is based on the Lynnfield core, is clocked at 3.06 GHz (up to 3.73GHz via Turbo Boost), and features Hyper-Threading support. 8MB of L3 cache, a dual-channel memory controller and a 95W TDP.

This is paired together with 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM memory as well as with a PCI Express x8 LSI 2008 HBA 6Gbps SAS/SATA controller, enabling the NAS to support RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and JBOD modes.

Power is handled by dual redundant 700W PSUs and the NAS features four hot swappable system fans monitored, together with the power supply units, by a redundant system alert.

The Thecus N16000 can be connected to the company's network via a Gigabit Ethernet port which is driven by Intel's 82574L NIC.

In addition, the NAS can also be setup with 10Gb Ethernet and an add-in USB 3.0 card is installed in one of the PCI Express slots available.

Thecus' NAS is configurable through a web-based server management interface which is available in a wide selection of languages, outside of English, and the data stored can be protected thanks to the AES 256bit encryption support.

“Storage companies are able to deliver new levels of intelligence and performance into NAS solutions with Intel Xeon X3480 processors,” said David Tuhy, general manager, Intel Storage Group.

“The energy efficient performance of the Intel processor provides key building blocks to deliver a solution that offers anytime, anywhere access to data,” concluded the company's rep.

The Thecus N16000 is expected to arrive at the end of February and the base price has been established at $5,920 US.
