The first 4G networks in the world based on the LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology have been fired up in Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. Both networks have been deployed by wireless carrier TeliaSonera, which thus becomes  the first LTE operator around the globe. According to the company, the launch of its new network will offer customers new possibilities for connectivity on their laptops, with enhanced speeds and capacity.

“We are very proud to be the first operator in the world to offer our customers 4G services. The use of mobile broadband in the Nordic countries is exploding and customers need higher speeds and capacity. This is why we launch 4G services in both Stockholm and Oslo,” says Kenneth Karlberg, president and head of Mobility Services.

The wireless carrier also stated that the commercial availability of its network would offer it the possibility to deliver a series of demanding services to its users, including web TV broadcasting, extensive online gaming and web conferencing. “Being first out with new technology gives us unique experience that we can use on all our markets. We will continue the roll-out to offer our customers new communication services for the future,” Kenneth Karlberg also mentioned.

The new networks offer enhanced connectivity to users in the central city areas of Stockholm and Oslo, and are mainly aimed at mobile data. The data transfer speeds the new networks can deliver are said to be up to ten times faster than those offered by 3G. The carrier also announced that it was currently working on delivering the 4G services to users in Sweden's and Norway's largest cities, and that it also had licenses in Finland.

“The Stockholm 4G city network is supplied by Ericsson. The Oslo 4G city network is supplied by Huawei. The modems at launch come from Samsung. Evaluation of suppliers for TeliaSonera's common 4G core network and radio networks in the Nordic and Baltic countries is in progress and vendors will be selected in the beginning of 2010,” the company further revealed.
