The Settlers is the first game to involve players' input in building settlements and managing resources through mouse operated point and click interface. The first game in the series was released in 1993 for Amiga games console and PC. Due to the games' success, The Settlers II: Veni Vidi Vici followed in 1996, which took all by surprise by having Macintosh support. Later on, Ubisoft released a Mission CD add on for the series' second installment.

1998 marked the release of The Settlers III and its add on The Settlers III: Quest Of The Amazons. The Settlers IV and its add on The Trojans and the Elixir of Power followed in 2001.

Heritage of Kings, the fifth installment of the series was released in 2004, and now, the German publisher is working on The Settlers II 10th Anniversary.

The games' name was "Die Siedler" in Germany, and The Settlers in the rest of Europe. The U.S. publisher of the game, SSI, tried to change the name of the game into "Serf City" but as it didn't register the expected success, the publisher changed the name back.
