Sony Europe boss is quite confident

The console war between the top three companies, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony, has supplied us with a lot of interesting quotes over the years, mostly regarding the dominance of one or another console over its competition. With words focusing on the near future and the following months, the forecasts of various executives were extremely optimistic.

Now, as Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves is preparing to retire from his position, he revisited some of the statements made by his fellow executives at the Japanese company and revealed, once more, that the PlayStation 3 would be the dominant console. But he refrained from using very optimistic forecasts, saying that it would become the best in three to five years, which is already getting very close to the scheduled 10-year lifespan of the device.

“I don't think it will be next year, but in three to five years it will become dominant on the market,” Reeves told GamesIndustry about the PlayStation 3. “The legacy will be that people will see a tortoise and hare situation. In a way, in the end it will be a dead heat. People will say PS3 took a while to get going but it really caught up very quickly and confounded many of the critics from the first year. When I see the line-up ahead, when I see what's lined up on the new product side, I'm very, very optimistic for what I see for PlayStation's future in the PAL territories.”

It's good to see that at least some executives are making some more realistic forecasts on the future of the products. Whether or not we will see the slow turtle that is the PS3 run laps around its opposition in the form of the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 is still a question that can't be answered right now.

Hopefully though this competition between the three consoles will end up with the average gamer gaining the most features and high-quality titles.
