Another day, another report about the PSP2, as Sony is now rumored to be pitching the upcoming device to developers as being as powerful as a PlayStation 3.

The PSP2 is being rumored intensely in the past few months, with plenty of details popping up all over the place, and even a few artistic mock-ups of what it might look like with all its speculated features.

Now, after hearing yesterday that the PSP2 is set to be officially revealed during a Sony press conference in Tokyo on January 27, UK trading website MCV says that the Japanese company is doing some heavy hyping for the device to developers.

The report suggests that Sony is pitching the PSP2 to be as powerful as a PlayStation 3, and as a high-end portable equivalent of its full pledged home console.

This isn't the first comparison between the PSP2 and PS3, as a previous rumor suggested that even if its hardware is inferior, the new handheld device can output graphics almost at the same level of quality as the PlayStation 3, largely because it renders them on a smaller screen.

No other details have been revealed, but we already know a lot of things about the new portable device and how it stacks up against the current PSP and the PSP Go.

According to the rumors, the PSP2 will implement a few cosmetic changes, including a second analog stick, and might even retain the sliding form factor seen on the PSP Go.

The device will rely on digital downloads, but it might also carry a slot for an unspecified media format, so that every type of gamer will be pleased.

Besides this, the PSP2 is set to sport a touch-sensitive trackpad on its back, in order to allow games to use a more varied control interface.

Sony hasn't officially commented on any of this, but the chief of its PlayStation division, Kaz Hirai, offered some heavy hints about the handheld on more than once occasion.

The PSP2 is set to be revealed on January 27, and it might be launched onto the market at the end of the year.
