Technology is predictable

The current generation of consoles and computer hardware is filled with cutting-edge equipment that makes them extremely powerful and capable of rendering some of the most beautiful landscapes and games right in your own home.

But progress is inevitable and, despite the fact that the current consoles are still quite powerful, even though a few years have passed since their release, the next generation of devices will still arrive whether we like it or not.

Although many console manufacturers claim that their own platform will be on the market for up to 10 years, German game developer Crytek pegs the next generation of consoles and hardware to arrive around 2012.

The CEO of the company, Cevat Yerli, reveals that, according to his company's roadmap of technology, the next batch of consoles might be arriving around that year. He says that his team is already working on a new version of the CryEngine, which will support that next batch of devices. Don't forget that the CryEngine 3, which will premiere with Crysis 2 on consoles, is seemingly already pushing the limit of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“We will have our next engine ready by that, independently whether there will be hardware or not,” Yerli says. “We are assuming based on the cycle – the Moore's Law – and everything if you predict the computational power and trend. You kinda know how much CPU and GPU will be there and trend. If you take those things into account you can sort of predict where things are going.”

So there you have it, console fans, the PlayStation 4, Xbox 720 and a new Nintendo device might be appearing at that time. Let's just wait until then and see how things will progress.
