2K Games has just announced that the upcoming The Darkness II has been pushed back from its initial release date of fall 2011 to early next year.

2K has had quite a few interesting titles released in the last few years, but few that weren't made by its longtime partner, Rockstar Games. 2007's The Darkness was one of those exceptions, with the game, based on a hit series of comic books, impressing a lot of players through its blend of shooter mechanics and a rather paranormal power that allowed the protagonist, Jackie Estrado, to quickly dispense of his enemies.

Earlier this year, 2K confirmed that The Darkness II will be heading to all major platforms this fall, seeing Jackie once again try to take down his enemies through new and exciting powers, not just through weapons.

Sadly, for those who were looking forward to the title, 2K has now announced that The Darkness II has been pushed back, and is now scheduled to arrive in February, 2012.

"2K Games announced today that The Darkness II, for all previously announced video game consoles and PC, is now planned for release on February 7, 2012 in North America and February 10, 2012 internationally."

The development team at Digital Extremes will on doubt use this extra time to polish up on the gameplay, as well as add in a few new features that will make The Darkness stand out among other first-person shooters.

Those that can't wait until next year might want to head down to the San Diego Comic-Con this week, as 2K will be holding a special panel called " Spreading The Darkness: From Comic Book to Video Games and Entertainment" which sees one of the comic book's co-creators, Marc Silvestri, alongside the developers and the voice actor for the Darkness, Mike Patton, talk about the property.

A demo kiosk will also be set up at the Top Cow booth, where players can wield the new Darkness powers that will be included in the game.
