Disney Interactive Studios has confirmed that it is developing a TRON videogame, called Evolution, which is set to be released at some point during the 2010 holiday season just before the TRON: Legacy movie is launched in theaters.

The game should be developed for the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PC. Propaganda Games is handling development duties for the game, and Olivia Wilde, who is portraying Quorra in the upcoming movie, has been confirmed as reprising her role in this iteration and will accompany the protagonist that is controlled by the player as they explore the virtual world of TRON.

TRON: Evolution is set between the two movies and will tie into the story of the second one, allowing players to get access to more of the lore of the universe and granting them a better understanding of the plot of the sequel.

Light cycles will feature prominently in the game and disc-based combat will also make an appearance, even if Evolution should be more of an adventure experience than a simple action title. It's not clear whether the look of the TRON videogame will be closer to the old school image of the old Legacy movie, from 1982, or closer to the sequel. It would be really interesting to see Propaganda blend the two in order to create a truly unique videogaming experience.

Dan Tudge, who is the vice president and general manager at Propaganda Games, said that “We expect TRON: Evolution to be a premier action-focused game that both stands on its own and supplements a major event film. Because Propaganda Games is based in Vancouver, which was the site of the film's principal photography, we were able to leverage the proximity to continuously collaborate with the filmmakers and ensure authenticity between the two projects.”
