Disney confirms

Disney held an event during which it revealed its plans for the future and it seems that one of the biggest news almost did not make it out. Steven Lisberger, who directed the last Tron movie, has confirmed that Disney is working on a videogame tie in for Tron Legacy, set to be released at the same time as the movie in December 2010.

Steven Lisberger is the producer on the new project and he told Latino Reivew that the game was already in development but that he did not know whether Disney had confirmed whether it existed or not.

Apparently, the game will follow the same plot as the movie, focusing on how the father and son team battle their way out of the cyber universe that aims to capture them. The game will probably focus on the light cycle competitions, which are also set to return in the sequel movie, but Disney might opt for a more progressive approach and could add even a light role playing element to the new Tron game.

Monolith Productions and Buena Vista Interactive already released a rather modern looking take on Tron in 2003. The game was called Tron 2.0 and was available for the Xbox, the PC and the Mac. It told the story of Alan Bradley within the confines of the first person shooter. The title was a flop on release and the planned expansion pack and sequel were canceled. The ideas used in it were initially considered for the movie.

Let's hope that the new Tron Legacy videogame and movie manage to do better than Tron 2.0. After all, this is one of the headlining titles for 2010 when it comes to movie releases, so Disney will be under pressure to create a tie in that can be picked up by a wide variety of gamers while also maintaining the legacy of the franchise.
