Even though no rumors have emerged yet about a possible Android 2.3 software update release for T-Mobile's G2 smartphone, it looks like customers who own this device won't have to wait too long to get it.

According to an unnamed HTC spokesperson, the G2 is scheduled to receive an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread this quarter.

The HTC official has revealed the information to the guys over at Computerworld, but hasn't specified a certain release date for the deployment of the update.

T-Mobile G2 is a variation of the European-based Desire Z, which is already on track to receive the Android 2.3 update this year.

However, unlike its European counterpart that uses the HTC Sense interface, T-Mobile's G2 is delivered with an unmodified stock version of the Android 2.2 Froyo.

Based on the fact that smartphones using UIs baked by the manufacturer are prone to delays when it comes to software updates, we can assume that the G2 might be receiving its Gingerbread update before Desire Z.

Targeting the mid-end smartphone market, the G2 is powered by a Qualcomm MSM 7230 800 MHz processor.

The smartphone features a medium-size 3.7-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors support and 480 x 800 pixels resolution.

Bearing a slider form factor, the handset comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, which should make texting more pleasant in comparison with standard bar phones.

It also sports a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, as well as video recording capabilities (720p).

Other key features of the device include HSDPA (14.4 Mbps) and HSUPA (2 Mbps), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, 4 GB storage, 512 MB RAM, microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 8GB card included), as well as GPS with A-GPS support.

T-Mobile G2 is powered by a 1300mAh Li-Ion battery, which should provide up to 10 hours of talk time (up to 7 hours for 3G) or up to 430 hours of standby time.
