T-Mobile announced that all of its G1 mobile phones were getting a firmware update. The newest version of the Android OS, which the company states that isn't the 'Cupcake' update that most users were expecting to see, will offer some bug fixes along with new features, and will be rolled-out to users in the following two weeks.

T-Mobile announced that the new release, MR 1.1 RC33, would include system enhancements that would allow it to offer the “Check For Upgrades” feature, enabling users to check for system upgrades, along with Voice Search, a new Google feature for use when performing searches, as well as the option to save any picture that has been received via MMS.

When it comes to bug fixes, the company states that users that shut down Wi-Fi will not be forced to sign back into their IM session, while the reminder has also been updated and now works properly. For the time being, the new release will be delivered to T-Mobile's users over-the-air, although a version available for manual installation is also expected to hit the Web in the near future, but the official method to upgrade the firmware remains the wireless one. Moreover, users need not take any action, since the update will reach every one of them, although at random.

MR 1.1 RC33 has been already released to a small number of users, states the company, while all other G1 owners should receive it in a short while. Unfortunately, as stated above, this is not 'Cupcake' and there will be no on-screen keyboard coming to the device, as some were expecting to see. As T-Mobile stated, 'Cupcake' “is an Android development branch that is a work in progress.” No specific information on the release date of this update has been unveiled yet.
