The Google team is currently working on an update for their Android platform, which will come under the form of some improvements and will be named Android CupCake. The update hasn't been released just yet, but some screenshots have already made it to the web. It seems that there will be some new applications available for users, complemented by a highly-expected virtual keyboard.

According to the news, Android users will benefit from features such as a new Local Setting Page, which would allow for different locales and different text inputs to choose from, a new windows opening/closing animation effect, namely a popping effect, as well as a new option to view third-party applications running on the device, although users will not have the possibility to terminate them.

The Android “Cupcake” also comes with a new default Notepad, a new Global Time application, a new Spare Parts Application, which seems to deliver several extra settings including setting windows animation and transition animation speed, font size, end button behavior and more, also including a “display rotation” option that should allow auto-rotate based on orientation across the entire operating system.

The new Virtual Keyboard pops up on every edit box. The device won't provide a haptic feedback, but this feature might be included in the final version of the platform. In addition, the buttons are reported to look a little better while including more shadow.

Cupcake was rumored to be released on the G1 today, yet T-Mobile seems to have denied the move. According to engadget mobile, T-Mobile has sent the following official statement: “According to the Android team, 'Cupcake,' which is the code name for an Android software build, is still a work in progress that is considered to be a development branch and not for general availability. We will update you as T-Mobile G1 software updates are made available to T-Mobile customers.”
