Internet singing sensation meets the Queen of Television

Susan Boyle, the Scottish spinster that re-wrote the book on how appearances can be deceiving or, as she put it, on how we should never judge a book by its cover, has just finished taping her interview with Oprah Winfrey via satellite, MTV News informs. The singer, whose life is now more secluded than before on account of the excessive media attention, talks about anything fans want to know, from her singing to her personal life and even the highly mediated makeover.

Ms. Boyle was not allowed to leave the country and travel to the US for the interview on account of her still being a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent, where she was also discovered. Consequently, while Oprah and BGT judge Simon Cowell were in the US, Susan invited fans into her home in Scotland thanks to a satellite transmission, while also opening up on many topics for the first time ever, with the help of subtitles.

“Welcome to my home. I have been born and raised here for the past 48 years.” Ms. Boyle says in her subtitled introduction. “I was the youngest of nine, so it used to be quite hectic. My mother used to sing to us a lot, especially when she was working, so it’s a sort of habit I picked up from her. At school I was encouraged to be in choirs. I was kind of a slow learner in school, so something like singing was a good way of hiding behind that and boosting my confidence. I sang at karaoke, which most people do for fun. I did sing at one or two occasions within the family.” the “Hairy Angel” further adds.

Her mother passed away two years ago, which is also when she stopped singing for a while. In recent months, though, she has started to regain her lost confidence, and to sing in the church choir again – her appearance on Britain’s Got Talent was just her way of seeing if she had what it took to stand in front of a larger audience and perform. Judging by her rapidly ascending star, she more than fits the bill.

Speaking of fame, in the same interview, Ms. Boyle also says that she’s slowly learning to adjust to being so popular, but that she’s enjoying it thoroughly. The makeover, she adds, is not so much a makeover as something any woman in her position would have done, so the media should perhaps not pay too much attention to it. “I did a bit.” Susan tells Oprah when she’s asked about the changes in her appearance. “But that was just to tidy myself up like any other female would have done. Depends by what you mean by a makeover. I mean, my best friend actually helps me with my make up. I mean, that’s hardly a makeover.” Ms. Boyle adds.

The Susan Boyle interview is included in a two-part special Oprah show called “The Oprah Winfrey Show: The World’s Got Talent.”
