A-listers flock on the green “red” carpet

One of the most anticipated movies of 2010, Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” which plans to bring a new twist to the well-known story, premiered at London’s Odeon Leicester Square the other day. Stars Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Mia Wasikowska, together with director Tim Burton, glammed up the red carpet, which was actually green for the occasion, as JustJared can confirm.

Newcomer Mia Wasikowska, an Australian actress who got her big break with the film, looked positively stunning in a flowing, printed Valentino gown and a new chopped ‘do. The design reminded of the dress Halle Berry wore at the Oscars a few years back, when she also took home the award for Best Actress for her performance in “Monster’s Ball,” but Mia’s was simpler and, because of it, more statuesque. Though the weather was very damp and the star got her long trail wet, she managed to carry off the dashing outfit in style.

Singer Avril Lavigne, who sings the lead track for the film, was also equally gorgeous. Though she’s renowned for her punk-inspired outfits and this would have certainly been a good occasion to bring on the funkiness, Avril chose something more demure and elegant. She paired the black Dolce & Gabbana siren dress with Velvet Angels pumps and a vintage SJ Phillips, of which JustJared claims it might actually date from 1910. If so, then this goes to show Avril knows more about fashion than just to rebel against it.

Anne Hathaway, who plays the White Queen in the film, chose to make a contrasting note with these two female stars, going for something young and flirty. Then again, Anne is not exactly known for being a fan of intricate and heavy outfits, so her choice for a brown Vivienne Westwood Couture creation, sparkly and strapless, suited her wonderfully. She matched the playful dress with Casadei platform shoes (with some ruffle details on them) and jewelry from Stephen Webster.

Director Tim Burton came, as expected, accompanied by his wife and long-time collaborator Helena Bonham Carter. They’re the kind of couple who says they’re stranger to combs and therefore own none, so they made quite an impression at the London premiere of “Alice” as well. Burton kept it classy in a simple, black suit, but Helena was truly something to look at, in a ruffled, asymmetric creation, with bows and a strange combination of fabrics. She even had a Queen of Hearts custom-made clutch, of which she was extremely proud and kept showing it off.

Last but not least: Johnny Depp, the man of whom they say he can literally do no wrong where fashion is concerned and who would look good in rags. Usually a daredevil with fashion, this time, Johnny kept it very simple and elegant in a black suit, open-neck shirt without a tie, plenty of rings and, of course, blue shades. He still managed to cause hysteria among the fans gathered outside in the rain for the chance to have a look at their idols.
