The mouse and keyboard setup is crucial for the game

Starcraft II was the biggest PC-based release when it arrived in 2011, and the Heart of the Swarm expansion has the potential to deliver the same performance, but players should not expect to see the strategy game arrive on home consoles soon.

Dustin Browder, who is the leading designer working on Starcraft II, told Kotaku that, “If I can control a cursor on the television with my hand on the touchscreen, that might be able to work.

“Because of the hotkey scenario, it’s not like players actually play StarCraft with the mouse only–they play with the mouse and keyboard.”

He says that in many ways the experience would be similar to that of the PC casual gaming crowd that is able to play entire games using just the mouse, allowing to add the keyboard and get serious about the game.

Browder says that Blizzard does not currently have a team actually working on a console version of Starcraft II.

He did, however, talk about a demo of the game that Sony showed using the Move motion tracking peripheral.

He added, “I wanted to kill myself. I found it very difficult to make it work. I believe that if I had practiced as much as he had, I would’ve enjoyed it more… but for us it felt like it was gonna be a lot more effort to still make that work, to still make that really sing.”

Fans were expecting to see the Heart of the Swarm expansion to be released during the summer of the year, but it seems more likely that Blizzard will deliver it towards the end of the year.

The developer has sketched out a new campaign, focused on Kerrigan and her relationship with the Zerg, and those focused on multiplayer matches will get new units and new tactics.
