The space-themed MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) genre is definitely seeing an ascending trend in terms of titles that are aimed at it. Although there are a couple of games that dominate the market, like EVE Online, that doesn't stop other game developers from making titles and marketing them as games that will take the online space experience to new heights.

One of these is Cryptic Studios' Star Trek Online, which is aimed at bringing a great space-themed online experience based on the extremely popular Star Trek franchise of movies and TV shows. Even though Cryptic has been acquired by Atari, this project is extremely important, especially because a new Star Trek movie will appear next year and the hype created around it might stir interest in this game.

We've already heard a few details about this title, like the fact that you will be commanding your own ship and decide what planets to explore, but now Craig Zinkievich, the executive producer, comes to talk about the careers that you can choose in this game. He goes on to emphasize the importance of these careers and your role as the captain of a ship by presenting various commanders that appeared in the Star Trek TV series.

“You are the captain of your ship. You have customizable bridge crew pets to help you, and you can increase the skills of those crew members during play. But as far as the direct flying and commanding of your ship goes, it’s in your hands. Being in command doesn’t limit your role. You can choose from a variety of careers such as engineering, tactical, medical, science, etc. Your career path will affect your skills and how you command your crew. Think about characters like Jean-Luc Picard or Beverly Crusher. Picard was an archeologist and diplomat and Crusher was a doctor. They all became ship captains, but what they had done before influenced their command style.”

These news reports are certain to bring a smile on the faces of the big number of Star Trek fans out there. Without a doubt this game will become pretty popular so Atari must make sure that it will be marketed thoroughly. Look forward to it next year, although a concrete launch date hasn't been established yet.
