14 DAY TRIAL // The space-themed MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) market is definitely a crowded one. We've got EVE Online, which currently dominates its rivals, but we also have quite a few new contenders that are starting to appear and promise to take the space exploration experience to a whole new level in terms of combat, gameplay and story.
One of these new titles that want to completely change the space MMORPG scene is Cryptic Studio's Star Trek Online. The game, set in the famous Star Trek universe, promises to give players their own starship to command and explore a variety of planets and solar systems with. In their journeys they will meet new alien races, some friendly, some hostile, with which they need to establish contact in order to gain experience.
Craig Zinkievich, executive producer of Star Trek Online, talked with Skewed and Reviewed and revealed some very interesting details about this future game, which is set to be launched in 2009. He went on to say that players would start with a basic starship and, as they progressed through the game, they would receive upgrades for their craft and for their character, which they would use depending on the situation.
"About fifty percent of your time will be spent in space, and the rest of the time you will be exploring planets, boarding other ships, visiting space stations or performing tasks aboard your own ship. Players will start with a basic starship, and as they progress through the game they will have the opportunity to upgrade to another ship or improve the abilities of the one they have. Some ships are more general purpose and some are more specialized. Your ship and the equipment you outfit it with help define the role you play in combat."
Some pretty interesting things, which are sure to wet the appetite of all the Star Trek fans out there, who can hardly wait to get their hands on one of the starships from their favorite TV series. Let's just hope that Cryptic will do a good job with this game, and offer players a great space experience.
