News about the most popular title in the series may arrive in the future

Square Enix is by far one of the most well-known Japanese video game developers and publishers out there, owning franchises like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, which have made JRPGs popular all around the world, not only in its native Japan.

One of the most popular titles, even though it is quite old, was Final Fantasy VII, which spawned off many spinoffs and even a critically acclaimed animated movie. The title, originally released for the first PlayStation, essentially made JRPGs cool to play in the Western world and really made Square Enix a global company.

As the large corporation is already working on multiple titles, including Final Fantasy XIII and XIV, you could clearly think that there are no plans for anything related to the popular title, except the most recent release from Square Enix on the PlayStation Network.

Not quite so, at least according to Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Final Fantasy XIII, who talked with Videogamer at the GamesCon in Cologne, Germany. “As for a VII remake, all I can advise right now is to play the PSN release that just came out for the time being. Maybe, perhaps we'll have some news for you at a later time.”

Very interesting, but Kitase went on to highlight that a supposed revamp of the old title wasn't on his priority list, at least in the near future. “I'm actually working on multiple projects right now,” he said. “I don't know exactly what new projects I'll be taking on after XIII, but I am working on Agito XIII as well, so maybe I'll be able to focus a little bit more on that project once XIII is complete.”

Well until we can get to see a current-generation revamp of Final Fantasy VII, we can still enjoy the upcoming XIII, which will arrive this winter in Japan and next year in the West, as well as the XIV MMO, due for release next year.
