Sprint makes the update available for download

Officially, Samsung Moment owners on Sprint's network can now download and install the latest flavor of Google's Android platform for their devices. Spotted for the first time a few days ago, and announced in early 2010 as being on its way to the handset, the software update is now available on Sprint's support page, for all those interested in it.

Here's what the wireless carrier notes on that page: “Enhance the features and capabilities of your Samsung Moment with this software update, including 2.1 Android update. This update includes: - 2.1 Android update (Éclair). - Keypad backlight optimization. - Bulk Bluetooth contact push. - Various Bluetooth fixes. - Increased speed and performance. - Swipe to Unlock/Mute/Speakerphone. - New camera features - Pandora enhancements.

It seems that the second quarter release date that Sprint announced not too long ago paid off much sooner than expected. One might argue that the software update was promised initially a few months ago, and that Sprint delayed its release, yet Android 2.1 is now available for Samsung Moment, and this should make users rejoice, especially since it is the official software update.

On the other hand, not all Sprint customers owning a device powered by Google's Android operating system can enjoy the latest flavor of the operating system on their handsets. Sprint promised the Android 2.1 update both for Samsung Moment and HTC Hero, but it seems that only the former has received it for now.

Those who would like to try the software update on their HTC Hero devices on Sprint's network can do so via unofficial channels. The software solution leaked into the wild, a recent article on Android Central states. This might not be the final release of Android 2.1 for HTC Hero, and it seems that users might also lose their root when installing it, as it has been signed with release keys, which means that those willing to give it a try should take all the necessary precautions before proceeding.
