Wireless carrier Sprint has finally decided to start the roll-out of the long-awaited Android 2.1 software update for the Samsung Moment. The update was promised for Moment users back in early 2010, but Sprint did take its time before making it available for download. However, the good news is that the solution is finally here, and that the owners of this Android-based mobile phone should be able to enjoy the latest features the operating system included in no time.

According to the update instruction Sprint published on its website, the new software is compatible only with Samsung Moment, SPH-M900. Users should first check the current version of the software on their devices before proceeding with the update. In case the Baseband Version on Moment is S:M900.8.OS.DE03, the software is not needed, but, in case it differs from this version, users will have to download and install it on their phones.

According to a recent article on androidcentral, the software update should bring the following improvements: - Keypad backlight optimization - Bulk Bluetooth contact push - Various Bluetooth fixes - Increased speed and performance - Swipe to Unlock/Mute/Speakerphone - New camera features - Pandora enhancements.

It seems that Sprint made the update available on Thursday, but only for a short period of time, and that the actual deployment will begin today. Considering the fact that the update was initially expected to arrive about two months ago, we can only hope that Sprint won't delay it even more, and that the roll-out will indeed start today, just as promised. Unfortunately, the wireless carrier hasn't made an official announcement on the matter, although it stated a few days ago that the Android 2.1 update for Samsung Moment (and for its HTC Hero, for that matter) was still on track to arrive during the second quarter of the ongoing year.

Those interested in the new update should check on Sprint's support page to download it when it becomes available. The update installation instructions are available here (PDF link).
