Wireless carrier Sprint recently announced its plans to offer customers new mobile phones in the near future, with the mention that some of these handsets would run under Qualcomm’s Brew Mobile Platform (according to the operator, the Brew MP is “a mobile operating system that can support feature phones and smartphones alike”).

In other words, Qualcomm's operating system lies somewhere between the operating systems we’re accustomed with seeing in smartphones today (and which provide users with various customizations options, including applications, services and different Uis), and platforms designed specifically for feature phones (which are usually called dumb, given the fact that they come with limited functionality).

Sprint is committed to delivering the most compelling technology to our customers, through a variety of operating systems, and we now have the ability to uniquely integrate compelling features and services deep in the hardware with Brew MP,” said Brian Finnerty, director of device development for Sprint. “By supporting both high-performance mobile Java and native applications on Brew MP, we can offer more advanced devices to an even broader set of Sprint customers.”

According to the mobile phone carrier, the announcement is set to prove that Sprint is committed to provide its users with various choices when it comes to the handset they would like to purchase. Moreover, the carrier also says that its Sprint Application Developer Program enables developers to build software solutions for different platforms.

Qualcomm Brew MP, notes BGR, has managed to get a lot of attention from manufacturers and carriers alike, and one of the makers that announced a Brew-based handset for this year is HTC. Sprint hasn't unveiled any specific details on the company that will deliver the BREW-based Sprint phone, yet there are great chances that HTC will be the one.
