Wireless carrier Sprint and Samsung Mobile announced on Tuesday the launch of a Windows phone on the operator's airwaves, the Samsung Intrepid smartphone. Compatible with Sprint's 3G network (EV-DO Rev. A), the new device comes with a series of productivity capabilities aimed mainly at users on-the-go, as well as with international roaming features for those who travel abroad.

Powered by Microsoft's recently launched Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional, the new Samsung Intrepid includes a customizable Today screen, offers fast access to some of the most important information to users, including emails, text messages, missed calls and calendar appointments, and is also capable of delivering an enhanced Internet browsing experience. Moreover, it also comes with various designer themes and allows users to create a personalized look for their devices.

“Combined with America’s most dependable 3G network and Sprint’s affordable rate plans, Samsung Intrepid is a great value for our customers who want a Windows phone with International capabilities,” said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president, Product Development, Sprint. “This phone offers the robust enterprise capabilities of Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional, and a best-in-class email experience with smooth Web surfing and access to applications that are both useful and fun.”

The specification list of the new phone includes a 2.5-inch touchscreen display that boasts a 320 x 240 pixel resolution, a full QWERTY keyboard, a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper with video recording capabilities, stereo Bluetooth capabilities, Wi-Fi connectivity, social networking integration, including Facebook, Flickr and Twitter, support for instant messaging and threaded text messaging, as well as for Microsoft ActiveSync and Microsoft Office Mobile (edit Word and Excel files, view PowerPoint).

“Samsung Intrepid makes it easier for people to do more on the go by giving them the choice to use voice or touch input on a sleek new Windows phone,” said Andy Lees, senior vice president of Microsoft's Mobile Communication Business. “Samsung Intrepid on Sprint’s reliable network is a great example of how customers benefit when industry leaders rally around a common goal – in this case convenience.”

The new Windows phone is set to become available for purchase from Sprint starting with Sunday, October 11. The price tag for Samsung Intrepid has been set at $149.99 (excluding taxes) upon the signing of a two year contract agreement with the carrier, after a $50 instant saving and $100 mail-in rebate. Users will be able to find it in Sprint's stores, Sprint Business Direct, Telesales and select third-party dealers, as well as on the company's website.
