Activision and Beenox have revealed a sequel to their last major project, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, in the form of Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

Activision continues to develop its Spider-Man franchise, and, seeing as how Shattered Dimensions' unique premise to feature not one but four different versions of the famous comic book hero paid off, it has tasked Beenox with once again trying to weave a unique story basing on multiple Spider-Man universes.

"The first Spider-Man entry by Beenox, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was touted as one of the wall-crawler's best Spider-Man games to date from both critics and fans," said Vicharin Vadakan, director, Global Brand Management. "Beenox is once again taking a fresh and different approach to bring a fast-paced and high-octane adventure and unexpected story to life in Spider-Man: Edge of Time."

The new game in the series will take a pretty serious turn in terms of story, as it features the untimely death of Amazing Spider-Man's Peter Parker, which causes massive breakups in the timelines of both the Amazing and the Spider-Man 2099 universes.

"At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them," said Dee Brown, Studio head, Beenox. "We want to create a totally distinct experience in Spider-Man: Edge of Time by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance."

Players will have to jump back and forth through time in order to try and fix both universes until it's too late, and actions in the past will have impact in the future, just like in Shattered Dimensions.

Spider-Man: Edge of Time will be released at the end of the year, and is expected to arrive on a variety of devices, like PC, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.
