The Getaway, billed by many to be a GTA clone, is an action-packed fast-paced game series set in London. It includes two installments to date: the original Getaway for the PlayStation 2 that was released in December 2002 and its sequel Black Monday, released in 2004. The third game in the series is slated for release somewhere in the later part of 2008 for the PS3 game console.

Even if comparison to the GTA franchise is inevitable, Getaway does a few things rather differently. First off, the game features two characters and two storylines that the player has to follow. The characters don't initially know each other, but they have various, usually unplanned and unpleasant, meetings as the game progresses. The tone is somewhat darker that in GTA. In the first game, the first protagonist, Mark Hammond, has his son kidnapped and is forced to work for the gang boss that took him. In the sequel, two small time crooks that stole from a crime kingpin and Russian oligarch are forced to take missions for him to escape death. Both games feature rather spectacular and cinematic final showdowns that bring together all the characters of the games and feature a lot of shooting, blowing up and dying.

Katie Ellwood is the main writer for the series. She confirmed for the fans of the series that a screenplay was developed for the first game in the series and that the movie was to be released shortly after the game hit the shelves. However, due to a string of delays, work was already completed on the second game, while the movie was not yet in production. But "We are certainly talking to production houses about a movie for the third game in the Getaway series," Ellwood states. A not-yet-ready-to-be-revealed writer is creating the screenplay and Sony is confident that no delays will affect this project.
