The console has radical functionality

There's a really tough war on the console market, with the top competitors Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony battling for every customer. Although Nintendo has the other two companies beat in terms of sales and fan base, its rivals haven't given up the fight yet.

Microsoft is trying to attract potential customers through various bundles or special offers, and let's not forget that, after the recent price cuts, the Xbox 360 does seem a very good deal for a lot of people. On the other hand, Sony has always bragged about the features the PlayStation 3 has, and how it is more than just a gaming console.

This was recently backed up by Ray Maguire, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe UK boss, who said that, in the first promotional campaigns, the company emphasized the radical new features, like the Blu-Ray drive, instead of focusing on the games. He also mentioned that the upcoming holiday season would change this because of the solid line up of games, which would really push the PS3 forward in terms of sales.

"When we first started – because all the functionality was radical – we talked about that functionality," he said. "And in doing that, maybe we weren’t strong enough on the games side of it. Now, with the strength of the games we’ve got coming out, this Christmas we’re definitely about the games. From our own first party, and also third party, there’s a feast of games for PS3 this year."

Some really interesting facts, because, looking back, you can really see that Sony hasn't promoted the PS3 as a game console. This strategy wasn't the best though, as a lot of people lost interest in the Japanese console because of the lack of quality games and didn't want a Blu-ray player that could only work with some quite expensive discs.

Let's just hope that Sony learned its lesson and will promote the PS3 as it should be, a game console that can do a lot of other things.
