Reward-driven programs

Sony has been a busy company these days. It is getting ready for the date when the PlayStation Portable Go arrives on the market, eager to do battle with the new Nintendo DSi handheld, which has taken a wide lead in hardware sales in both North America and Japan.

There are rumors that a new version of the PlayStation 3, bearing the surname Slim, will be released as the home gaming console is also getting a price cut. And yet the company still has the time and resources to think about its customers, as revealed by the recent trademark of something called, at least at the moment, P.S. Thanks.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America registered this trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on August 4 and the filling is describing the possible application of the new product as “incentive rewards program geared toward quantifying, identifying and motivating top consumer base with the goal of promotion and sale of video game hardware and software.”

The description makes it pretty clear that Sony is keen on offering rewards for the most loyal of players and buyers, although there is no way of finding out what the rewards might be or how they might be given.

With sales of the PS3 and the PSP trailing those of their rivals, such a scheme could provide interested gamers with more of a reason to keep playing games on Sony’s platforms rather than others. It would be interesting to see the company offering some small PlayStation Network games or downloadable PSP Go content for those who enter the PlayStation Thanks scheme.

It could help gain and maintain the fidelity of players while also giving them something to show for their dedication for all things Sony. Of course, all of the above is hypothetical until the firm makes an official announcement related to P.S. Thanks.
