Various sources indicate the same

The PlayStation 3 is currently the most powerful game console available on the market, but this hasn't guaranteed the success that Sony wanted for its device. Its high price tag and rather bulky design made fans orient themselves towards the Nintendo Wii or the Xbox 360.

But it seems that things might change in the not-so-distant future, despite further denials from various Sony representatives. What started as a rumor from an Asian source, involving a spy shot of a presumed PlayStation 3 Slim edition, is now becoming more and more likely.

In recent days we've seen the German version of online retailer Amazon list a PlayStation 3 Slim with no price or release date, and now, prestigious newspaper The Telegraph has run a story regarding a newer and slimmer version of the PlayStation 3 console.

It seems that, according to the article, a PS3 Slim will go on sale later this year, coming in two versions, a 40GB model that will cost £260 and an 80GB one that will make customer pay £300. If you're good with currency conversion, you can figure out that these two new models will have a higher price tag than the regular PS3s currently on sale, meaning that a price cut might be made to the older models, though it's still speculation.

Also, the possibility of a PS3 Slim is emphasized by Taiwanese website DigiTimes, which has revealed that Sony “placed significant orders for key Sony PS3 components” form local manufacturing plants in the Asian country. This is particularly weird as the PS3 hasn't been recording big sales, in order to justify the increase in component orders.

Overall, it seems that Sony has once again let slip a big announcement, like it did with the PlayStation Portable for example at the beginning of the year. Hopefully the company will come clean soon enough and fans will see whether they will pay less for a bulky PS3 or more for a slimmer one.
