The 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show is not over yet, but Sony is already looking forth to unveil new devices next month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The company has reportedly started to send out invites to the unveiling of new Xperia devices on February 26th, explicitly mentioning new smartphones.

"Find out what's new and what's next! Join us at our Press Conference at Mobile World Congress for the latest news on our Xperia smartphone portfolio and strategy," the said invitation reads.

This week, the mobile phone maker made official two new smartphones in the Xperia lineup, namely the Xperia S and the Xperia ion, and also announced the availability of Xperia NX and Xperia acro HD in Japan.

Both Xperia S and Xperia ion were unveiled with large touchscreen displays, as well as with fast dual-core application processors inside.

The Xperia S smartphone features a 4.3” HD Reality Display, a 1.5GHz dual core CPU, a 12-megapixel photo snapper on the back, 32GB of internal memory, and Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread to power it.

The Xperia ion smartphone comes with a 4.6-inch HD display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of internal memory, a 12-megapixel camera, and support for LTE connectivity. It will be launched in the US exclusively on the airwaves of AT&T.

Last year, CES brought to the spotlight the Xperia arc smartphone, while MWC saw a series of other Xperia devices, including the Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo and Xperia pro.

Since it launched two new smartphones at CES 2012 and it already sent out invites to next month’s event, we could expect Sony to unveil a handful of new handsets at the MWC show in Barcelona.

Nothing has been officially confirmed on this for the time being, but we could see new high-end smartphones launched in February, as well as mid-level ones. Keep an eye on this space for more info on the matter.
