Sony has responded to the NPD hardware and software sales results posted by the prestigious tracking group and, while it hasn't revealed any concrete numbers, did hype up its PlayStation 3 software lineup and praised Infamous: Festival of Blood as being the fastest selling PSN game of all time.

Even if the NPD charts for the month of October showed Microsoft once again ruling over all other consoles with its Xbox 360, which sold more than 394,000 units, Sony is quite confident in the upcoming winter holiday season, highlighting its lineup of high quality PlayStation 3 games, whether they're exclusive to the platform or otherwise.

"PlayStation 3 is primed for a great holiday season as this month's NPD report shows. We're seeing increased momentum in our 1st and 3rd-party software sales at retail, which are up 5% over last year, and we're demonstrating the industry's strongest software line up with blockbusters like Uncharted 3, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, Battlefield 3, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and new Move titles Everybody Dance and Carnival Island," said Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA.

Besides these titles that will sell a lot once people start making their holiday shopping sprees, Seybold also highlighted, via Industry Gamers, the recently released Infamous: Festival of Blood downloadable title, which went on to become the fastest selling game of all time on the PlayStation Network.

"On the digital front, we are also pleased to report that Infamous: Festival of Blood is the fastest selling PS3 digital game ever launched on PSN," he added.

The standalone expansion to Infamous 2 brought forth a new storyline and features for the protagonist of the series, Cole McGrath, as well as PlayStation Move support, all for just $9.99 (9.99 Euros), so it seems that lots of gamers were definitely thrilled with the deal.

The company is expecting some big sales throughout the month of November, as Uncharted 3 has already shipped more than 3.8 million units in its first day, but concrete sales figures are no doubt more important.
