Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson did say recently that it plans on coming to the market with handsets powered by Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system, but it seemed more like some distant idea, and not something that would materialize in the near future.

However, it appears that the company is actively working on the development of a Windows Phone 7 device, or more of them, if we understood it right, and that it might not be that long before the phones would land on shelves.

Microsoft’s head of marketing in the U.K., Oded Ran, is the one who said that Sony Ericsson is actively working on the development of its Windows Phone 7 products, a recent article on mymicrosoftlife.com reads.

Although Sony Ericsson said that it plans on delivering Windows Phone 7 devices to the market, it did not unveil specific info on the matter, nor did it came up with an official announcement on a handset running under the OS.

However, the handset vendor's CEO said a few days ago that the company has in store something impressive for us for the next few months, and the public announcement of a Windows Phone 7 handset might fit the bill.

The mobile phone maker will focus on the development of handsets running under Google's Android operating system, while removing the Symbian platform from its roadmap, though making room there for devices powered by Microsoft's solution.

“Android is definitely our focus, but we have not given up on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, although it had a bit slow to take off. But Windows 7 Phone is on the roadmap,” Sony Ericsson CEO Jan Uddenfelt said recently.

The bottom line is that Sony Ericsson is preparing the launch of its first Windows Phone 7 devices, even if there is a wide range of details still unknown to the world.

Hopefully, an official announcement will come in the near future, and that the handsets themselves will arrive on shelves pretty soon too.

Update: It appears that things might have been misunderstood, and that, although Sony Ericsson is a Windows Phone 7 partner, the said devices are not confirmed as being in development. (via My Microsoft Life)
