The newly announced Android-based Sony Ericsson Xperia neo smartphone is expected to make an appearance on the market in Australia too, on the airwaves of wireless carrier Telstra.

Apparently, the operator managed to ink an exclusive deal for the distribution of this device in the country during the first half of the ongoing year.

Specific info on when would the smartphone become available for purchase, or at what price tag, lack for the time being, but more should be unveiled as the launch date approaches.

“The Xperia neo will be available exclusively with Telstra and will hit Australian shores in the first-half of 2011,” is what Sony Ericsson Australia announced through its Facebook account (via Android Australia).

The new smartphone was announced officially during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, where Sony Ericsson unveiled two other Xperia phones too, the Xperia PLAY and Xperia pro.

The new Sony Ericsson Xperia neo arrives on shelves with a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 application processor inside.

It also sports 320 MB of internal memory, and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space, with an 8GB card included in the package.

The smartphone was packed with a 3.7 inch touchscreen display (a Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine), which boasts a 854 x 480 pixels (FWVGA) resolution.

The 8.1-megapixel photo snapper it has on the back features Auto focus, HD video recording (720p) capabilities, and LED flash (Sony’s Exmor R for mobile).

The Sony Ericsson Xperia neo measures 116.0 x 57.0 x 13.0 mm (4.6 x 2.2 x 0.5 inches) and weighs in at 126.0 grams (4.4 oz).

The new mobile phone runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, and offers support for a wide range of Google Mobile Services, as well as for applications available for download via the Android Market.

As stated above, exact info on the arrival of Sony Ericsson Xperia neo at Telstra Australia during the first half of the year still has to be unveiled, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.
