Mobile phone carrier O2 UK is the first operator to announce plans for adding a new Sony Ericsson handset to its offering, namely the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8. Unveiled officially only a while ago, the new device lands on the market with almost the same features as the company's high-end Xperia X10 does, though in a smaller form factor, and should be put on sale at the UK carrier sometime in September.

The upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 is based on Google's Android operating system. The handset boasts a 3-inch full touchscreen display that can deliver a 320 x 480 pixel resolution, and a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper with Geo-tagging features and video recording capabilities. The new mobile phone comes with 128MB of internal memory, to which users can add more via MicroSD memory card slot with support for up to 16GB of external storage.

“The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 is operated by the Google Android operating system. It is an entertainment smartphone which has access to thousands of apps on Android Market. The user interface is similar to that of the Xperia X10 Mini. The four-corners give easy one hand use and one touch access to your favorite apps. And Timescape brings all your communication with a person together in one place,” the wireless carrier notes on its website.

The specifications list of the upcoming Android-based device also includes a 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, Speakerphone, HSPA, USB port, and a 1150mAh battery that can deliver up to 5 hours of talk time or up to 16 days of standby time. The Xperia X8 measures 99 x 54 x 15 mm and weighs in at 104g.

The mobile phone should arrive on shelves with features like TrackID music recognition, Instant messaging, Threaded text messages, support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, Picture messaging, Twitter and Facebook apps, as well as with Sony Ericsson's Timescape solution, which puts all of user's communication with a person in one place. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 can be seen on O2 UK's website here.
