According to the latest news on the Web, Japanese – Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson might be getting ready to officially unveil the successor of its Xperia X1 mobile phones as soon as tomorrow, Wednesday, June 17. It seems that the company would intend to announce the Windows Mobile-powered Xperia X2 at the CommunicAsia in Singapore, or at least this is what rumors point at.

The device would come to the market as the fourth handset from Sony Ericsson to feature touch-screen capabilities, while also being the second device from the company to run under Microsoft's mobile operating system. The fact that the handset could be announced tomorrow is suggested by a leaked invitation to a press event that the phone maker plans to hold that day.

Although there are no exact details on what the joint-venture plans for June 17, it seems that the official announcement on Xperia X2 is the most likely thing to happen, though some other products, such as a new Bluetooth headset, might surface as well. And since the company already unveiled some of the expected mobile phones, such as the Satio (aka Idou) and Aino, X2 seems like a safe bet at the moment.

As for what the smartphone might include, it seems that it should feature a wide range of improvements over its predecessor. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 is expected to come with the more touch-friendly Windows Mobile 6.5, while also including a new panel interface, which should feature support for Remote Play so that the phone can be connected with a PlayStation 3 for media sharing.

In addition, the device should also come with a 3.5-inch OLED screen, 512MB of RAM and a faster processor when compared with the predecessor, not to mention an 8.1-megapixel photo snapper that should feature video-recording capabilities. Other specs include a 3.5mm headset jack, and upgradeability to Windows Mobile 7 as soon as the platform becomes available.
