Sony Ericsson has decided to expand their current company position, by launching a new research and development center in Chennai, India. This is the result of continuous collaboration that the Swedish company has been conducting from the beginning of the year with this region in India.

Mobile telecommunication has taken a turn for the better lately, as it managed to draw the interest and solid investments of several leading mobile phone manufacturers. As proof for the rapid development of mobile solutions, more than 60 million handsets have been sold in India in the last year.

Sony Ericsson is just one of the many others which have considered India to be an extremely viable market. Starting January this year, they have been sourcing local manufacture of phones in Chennai with EMS partners Flextronics and Foxconn.

"Over the past few years, Sony Ericsson has witnessed very encouraging growth in the Indian market, more than doubling its market share, and becoming amongst the top 3 GSM handset manufacturers. With a product development site in Chennai, as well as local manufacturing, Sony Ericsson is poised to further consolidate its growing momentum in the Indian market", said Sudhin Mathur, General Manager - Sony Ericsson India.

Moreover, Anders Grynge, Head - Product Business Group, Sony Ericsson India commented that "India is the world's fastest growing economy with a highly skilled technology-focused workforce. The Indian market is also one of the most exciting and dynamic, as consumers are adopting mobile communications technology rapidly. This can lead to innovations that have worldwide appeal, as well as make our products more accepted on a regional basis."

Sony Ericsson plans on further concentrating their efforts on providing solutions for reaching further developments at a similar fast pace. Through this expansion, they plan on increasing the popularity of the more than 20 handsets that are available for purchase on this market.
