The device is apparently codenamed Kokura

Obviously, few were those mobile users who actually thought that Sony Ericsson would stop at the 8.1-Megapixel camera in C905. On that note, the Swedish-Japanese company is in the run for the next revolution in mobile photography, along with many other handset makers on the market.

Apparently, a new CyberShot phone is currently in development at Sony Ericsson's labs. Codenamed Kokura, it is reported to hit the market in 2009. This device is supposed to pack an impressive 12 MP camera, and will come complete with a touchscreen and iPhone-like interface. Furthermore, it will be based on the TI3240 chipset with the Symbian OS version 9.4 and S60 interface.

The chipset in question that will provide all these goodies is the U500, a mobile chipset that combines several impressive features: high quality camcorder, 800 x 480 WVGA display support, advanced 3D gaming and 3D User Interface, CD quality audio performance, and high resolution video for a true mobile TV experience.

Another thing that is generating lots of rumors at the moment is the fact that Sony Ericsson will start using the universal SD card storage format instead of its M2, which basically means that users will get to spend less money on their memory card. Unfortunately, the phone won't come with a mini USB socket or 3.5 mm headphone jack, but it will rely instead on Sony Ericsson's usual proprietary connector.

The phone, even if it doesn't pack everything you could wish for (this should translate in the lack of mini USB and 3.5mm jack) and granted it hits the market late next year as rumored, might just be as revolutionary as the iPhone or as the G1, provided another handset maker doesn’t release something similar first. Guess we'll just have to wait and see, which is standard procedure when it comes to this type of rumors.
