Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announces having broken through the 20 million mark when it comes to accounts for the PlayStation Network on February 20.

The company says that it took the service one year and two months to get to 5 million users, one year and eight months to reach the 10 million mark and just two years and three months to get to 20 million registered accounts.

Overall, 380 million pieces of content have been downloaded from the Sony-powered service, with a combined value of about 180 million dollars.

Sony also says that the number of PlayStation 3 home gaming consoles sold all over the world is now over 21.3 million and growing at a good pace. One could be tempted to say that it's pretty remarkable that the number of accounts for the PlayStation Network is almost equal to the number of PS3 sold around the world.

One should take into account the fact that the PSN can be accessed from the PlayStation 3, but also from the PlayStation Portable and from the PC. Sony is also pretty squeamish about providing clear statistics related to how many duplicate accounts there are or which platform has the most registered accounts.

Two new initiatives related to the PlayStation Network prove to be very important and successful for Sony. Home, the social space launched late in 2008 after a long delay, has been installed by 4 million users so far. Home is important because it allows companies to create thematic spaces for their products and because it allows players to interact with each other while showing off their hard earned Trophies. Life with PlayStation has also garnered more than 2.6 million users with its ability to offer up to date news and weather information through the PlayStation 3.
