Sony first let us have a glimpse at its VPL-PW1000ES projector with a massive 4K resolution at the beginning of September, and now the outfit has finally provided an approximate release date together with a price for this impressive device.

The projector will become available starting with January of 2012 and in the UK, according to engadget, will retail for £18,000 which translates into about $28,000 US or 21,079 EUR, a whopping price no matter how you look at it.

For this much money home theater buffs will be able to watch movies, and other video content, at up to 8.8 megapixels (4096×2160 resolution) with 2000 ANSI lumens of brightness.

In order to achieve this impressive feat, Sony has used a new 4K SXRD panel that is paired with the company's Iris 3 technology in order to deliver a dynamic contrast as high as 1,000,000:1.

In addition to supporting 4K native resolution, the VW1000ES projector also features an exclusive 4K "upscaler" that dramatically enhances content, being SD or HD, 2D or 3D, while it can also display Full HD 3D movies, as well as 2D and 3D anamorphic films.

For Full 4K 3D, an integrated IR transmitter drives the projector's TDG-PJ1 active shutter 3D glasses.

A variety of installation options are also available as standard, including dual triggers, a 2.1 motorized zoom, an RS323 interface control over IP and compatibility with various home automation systems. According to Sony, the expanded throw distances are optimized for screens up to 200-inches.

No specific release date was provided but the January estimate seems to point out to an CES 2012 launch.

As far as we know, the VPL-PW1000ES will be the first projector of this kind developed especially for home theater use.
