Sona Mobile announced the launch of the Sona Media Platform, a media management system that delivers streaming content to BlackBerry devices.

Combining the Media Manager Server with a new version of the Sona Media Player, the new platform uses the concept of 'push media,' which means that content is transferred to wireless devices invisibly, and users are notified only when multimedia content has been delivered to the device and is available for playback. This content distribution method eliminates the need for subscribers to manually download video clips and provides subscribers with immediate access to content such as breaking news or daily highlights. Content can be streamed via the Sona Media Platform to the latest generation of BlackBerry devices. The Sona Management Server can be configured to support a variety of different push methods including SMS, WAP, SMTP, BES/MDS and email, ensuring compatibility with a multitude of media systems.

Sona's expanded Media Player for BlackBerry includes significant enhancements and new features, such as a "skinable" interface, configurable statistic logging, auto-updating, an integrated on-demand list showing available content and a "subscribe to push" function that allows users to select their subscription content within the player for automated delivery.

"This new platform expands the framework of our fully customizable Media Player for BlackBerry," said Shawn Kreloff, chief executive officer of Sona Mobile. "The addition of push media functionality to the Sona Media Player for BlackBerry takes the technology beyond basic media delivery and playback, further enhancing the end user experience. Used in tandem with Sona's mWager horse race wagering platform, it allows subscribers to place a wager and watch the race on their mobile device or automatically receive breaking news and updates."

The Sona Media Platform will be on display at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium 2007, May 8 - 10, in Orlando, Florida.
