Sol Computers has recently announced the introduction of new netbook and tablet devices built using the Pixel Qi display technology, which was specially designed to improve the legibility of LCD panels when used in high ambient lighting environments.

In order to achieve its goal, Pixel Qi displays can work in a special reflective mode, which uses some of the sunlight the LCD panel is exposed to for providing backlighting to the images shown on screen.

This improves both the legibility of the displays and their power consumption to the benefit of mobile computer users who often find themselves having to use their devices in brightly lit environments.

Moving back to the netbook and tablet announced today by Sol Computers, both of these use Pixel Qi displays and are designed to run the Windows 7 operating system.

Aside from the screen, the netbook has pretty standard specs, which includes a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N455 single-core processor, 3GB of system memory, a 250GB hard drive and a 6 cell, 4400mAh battery.

All these are fitted inside a case that weights 2.7 pounds and the 10.1-inch Pixel Qi display has a native resolution of 1024x600 pixels.

Moving to the tablet, this also gets a 10.1-inch display and an Intel Atom N455 processor, but this time this is paired with just 1GB of system memory and a solid state disk that can deliver between 8GB and 32GB of storage space.

The tablet also comes equipped with a G-sensor and including the built-in 3 cell, 3100mAh battery it weights roughly 2 pounds.

Sol Computers has set the pricing for the tablet at $1099, while the netbook will retail for $749, making them quite expensive when compared with other models not using Pixel Qi displays.
