A new flavor of the Skype for Android mobile application is now available for download for users of devices running under Google's mobile operating system, namely Skype v1.0.0.983, with a series of fixes and enhancements, as well as with a new feature included into the mix, namely VoIP calling on 3G. One of the most important fixes that the new flavor of the application comes to Android devices with would be related to some security vulnerabilities discovered with it only last week.

The breach is said to have emerged from incorrect file permissions, combined with the lack of encryption usage on the database files that are being used for storing contact information, chat history, and more.

With this update, Skype changed the permissions of said databases, so as to prevent access to personal information of users.

However, the guys over at Android Police note that the update is not meant for the leaked video version of the app, and that those who will continue to use it would do so at their own risk. However, the fix is expected to become available with the final video version of the application.

As stated above, the other notable enhancement the new release of the application comes with would be the addition of 3G calling capabilities in the United States.

Until now, the feature was available only for uses of Skype on Verizon's network, since the carrier had a special flavor of the app loaded on its mobile phones.

For those out of the loop, we should note that Skype offers features like:

Make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and call phones at Skype rates on the move Free Skype-to-Skype IM and calls over 3G or WiFi Cheap calls to landlines or mobile phones at great Skype rates Instant message one or many friends at the same time

Users interested in downloading the new version of the app would find it in the Android Market here. They should make sure they have a data plan or WiFi connection when using the software, and that their devices are supported, prior to downloading the app.
