Officials have announced a new toll for the number of people injured in the Simi Valley fireworks accident in California on July 4.

Twelve of them are children, the AP reports, citing sources in local police and hospitals. The other are teenagers as young as 17 years old, and the oldest victim is 78 years old.

Some were burnt and had metal debris launched at them, while others were trampled by a panicked crowd running away from the scene.

As I wrote, a wooden platform holding the pyrotechnics tipped off and a firework was accidentally detonated, igniting the other ones.

Authorities are labeling the incident as an unfortunate “mishap.” A video of the event on the night of the July 4 show has been posted above this news blog.
