"...we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again"

Sega's done some thinking recently and decided to "refresh" Sonic a bit. How come? Sonic and the Secret Rings was a massive success on the Wii platform and Sega's cute, blue hedgehog is still on for the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, so why is there a problem with the character. Speaking with Newsweek, Sega president Simon Jeffery said that they're "actually undergoing a fairly considerable refresh of Sonic as an intellectual property, as a character."

So, what purpose has that word, "actually", in this sentence. It's obvious to everyone that what Jeffery is trying to put in nice words is that Sonic will be taking a brake, no need to go around about it. And to make it even clearer, Jeffery continued: "We're not going to be bringing another game out on the other platforms for quite some time, because we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again. At the same time, even the recent 360 and Playstation 3 games have sold extremely well. Sonic is still an extremely endearing character; there's still a lot of love for Sonic out there in consumer land."

If we're to think about it a little, Nintendo's Mario is pretty much the same thing as Sega's Sonic. Now, if Sonic is obsolete, what's Mari? Are we to take Jeffery's word for the fact that Sonic really needs a time out? The bottom line is that a Sonic for the PS3 or the Xbox 360 is not going to happen very soon, that much we can understand. What we can't and refuse to understand is why would Sega put Sonic to sleep when it's still doing good? Nobody said it needed any changes.
