Developer BioWare has decided to offer fans of the Mass Effect series a free look at the upcoming new comic that it plans to deliver based on the universe, focusing on the earlier years of the Illusive Man, the leader of the Cerberus and one of the most important players in the second game in the series, serving as a helper and also foil to the main player controlled character.

Those players who are interested need to head over to the BioWare blog, where they can see seven pages from the comic, including two cover splashes that seem specifically designed to pick up the interest of those who have played the two games in the Mass Effect series.

The comic is called Mass Effect: Evolution and will be penned by Mac Walters and John Jackson Miller, with pencils by Omar Francia, and at the moment it's planned to run for four issues.

The Illusive Man has played a crucial part in the events of Mass Effect 2 and he will probably also impact the ultimate fate of the universe in the third game in the series, with aspects of his personality explored in the new comic that could impact his actions in the new game.

The official launch date for the first issue is set for January 19 and publisher Dark Horse is taking pre orders.

This is the fourth time that BioWare has ventured into the comic book universe with Mass Effect.

Redemption was designed to show what first game companion Liara T'Soni has been up to before the adventures detailed in the Lair of the Shadow Broker downloadable content pack and two smaller projects, called Incursion and Inquisition, were delivered to detail aspect of the in-game universe.

At the moment, BioWare is working on Mass Effect 3, which will see the Reapers assault Earth itself as Commander Shepard moves around the galaxy gathering allies for the final fight against the alien threat.
