Brother UK has released a free iPhone application that allows users to scan and print documents from their mobile phone. Compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, the software allows users to take a photo of a document using their mobile device and print it wirelessly to a compatible printer, or simply store it or share it via email.

The Brother iPrint&Scan application is fully compatible with Brother's inkjet all-in-one printers produced since 2009 that have a wireless interface. Models with a network interface can also be used if connected to a wireless network.

According to he developer, the most important features of the software include:

- Easy to use menu. - Simple steps to print your favorite photos. - Print photos directly from your iPhone camera. - Scan directly to your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. - Save scanned images to your photo album or email them. - Automatically search for supported devices on a local wireless network. - No computer and no driver required.

Besides the iPhone OS version, the company also plans to release versions of the application for smartphones running other operating systems, such as a variant for users of Android 1.6 or later devices.

"Smart phones are becoming an essential modern day business tool and we are pleased to be able to offer even more convenient features for our customers," said Phil Jones, sales and marketing director at Brother UK. "iPhone users have been waiting for an app like this for quite some time. We’re really pleased to be at the forefront of innovative printing technology, providing businesses with the means to succeed."

The initial version offered by the company supports only English, with French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch versions to follow by the end of the year. Owners of iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad devices with OS version 3.0 or greater can download the Brother iPrint&Scan application for free here.
