Characters will have unique abilities and weaknesses

After accidentally revealing the existence of God of War: Ascension and its nature as a prequel to the story of Kratos, Sony revealed the fact that the game will have both competitive and cooperative multiplayer.

The development team offered some details on the structure and the setup for the characters that players can create and then evolve in the new multiplayer mode.

Jason McDonald, who is the lead combat designer working on God of War: Ascension at Sony Santa Monica, stated, “Based on that selection you'll be able to gain magical abilities, items, different things you get from these unique gods that influence your style of play. In other games it would be considered your classes.”

But it seems that the game will also include actual named classes, with McDonald adding, “It's pretty similar to what you'd expect. Some are based on damage, some are based on healing and sustaining, some on magical attacks. We don't want to reveal what each god will do just yet but you can expect some key differences.”

The development team says that they are trying to get around the classic problem that Street Fighter once had, of everyone choosing to play with Ryu because of its superior rule set, by making sure that each potential player character has at least one big advantage and one similar flaw.

Developers are also assuring gamers who loved the first three core God of War titles that they are not changing the battle mechanics in any significant ways and that anyone who understands how to build a combo can safely use the same process in Ascension with only small modifications.

The next God of War is a PlayStation 3 exclusive title and will be launched during the spring of 2013, probably one of the last major titles for the Sony platforms.
