Sanoodi has recently announced the launch of SMap, a free application that allows users with GPS-enabled phones to record their routes and share them with friends, and which is currently available for BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows Mobile phones.

Sanoodi (shortened from the French "ca nous dit" which translates into "we really feel like doing") is a popular social networking UK-based website that enables its users to record, upload and share outdoor activities such as running, hiking, cycling, sailing on the Internet. The SMap application works in conjunction with the newly redesigned Sanoodi website by allowing users to record their routes directly from the cellphone and upload them on the spot via the wireless connection of the phone or later, after connecting the mobile to the desktop computer. This means that handset owners without a data plan can also use the application.

The routes can be managed from the phone so if a user wants to delete a route he can do so without having to visit the Sanoodi website. The application has two screens: a Pace Screen and a route Summary Screen, which displays route distance, average speed, elevation, pace in time/unit of distance, and total route duration.

Other features that are worth mentioning include the possibility of using multiple user accounts on the same device, route exporting as GPX or KML files for use in other applications, multiple activity types that can be updated from the Sanoodi website, elevation Snap Shot (GPRS only), as well as support for both imperial and metric units.

For those who want to try it out, the application can be downloaded here for BlackBerry OS version 4.2 or later, here for Windows Mobile 6 (Professional, Classic or Standard editions), and here for Symbian S60 3rd edition handsets. Versions for iPhone and Android are in the works, with release dates scheduled for December 2008 and the first quarter of 2009 respectively.
