According to the latest news on the Web, Samsung Electronics has managed to develop an LTE (Long Term Evolution) modem chipset for mobile phones and data cards. Moreover, the Korean mobile phone maker is expected to showcase the chipset at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week.

The development of the new Samsung LTE modem chipset comes shortly after another Korean company, LG Electronics, managed to develop its own LTE modem chip back in December last year, which was presented as the first such device in the world.

Samsung plans to use its LTE chip-adapted smartphone and data card to showcase its video-on-demand (VOD) and Internet telephony service, which are based on a 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) LTE Rel-8 standard. The company stated that the LTE modem chipset provides enough flexibility to allow being changed in case the LTE standard itself may change.

At the same time, Samsung also plans to unveil Mobile WiMAX solutions at the MWC show. The demonstration would include “Mobile WiMAX Ubicell” and mobile Internet devices, as well as the Netbook PC and smartphones. The “Mobile WiMAX Ubicell” has been developed so as to take advantage of mobile WiMAX in homes or small offices by connecting with femtocells.

As many of you might already know, the Korean mobile phone maker has been reported the past few days to plan on unveiling a wide range of new handsets at next week's conference. Among the devices that have already been spotted on the Web, although not all of them officially announced, we could count a new 12-megapixel camera phone, as well as a 16GB Omnia model. Other handsets that the company should unveil at the show range from the higher-end to the lower one of the market.
