14 DAY TRIAL // At the 3GSM World Congress, Samsung too had something in store for us and presented its new ultra edition extra-thin mobile phones, from the Ultra Edition II line, the U600 - Ultra Edition 10.9, the U700 - Ultra Edition 12.1, U300 - Ultra Edition 9.6 and the candy bar that is considered the world's slimmest mobile phone at the moment, the U100 - Ultra Edition 5.9.
And when they say Ultra, they're really not joking around. Lately, Samsung has done a pretty great job in slimming down all their mobile phones and has finally reached a 5.9mm milestone, leaving us all eager to find out if it's humanly possible to slim a phone down even more.
What's even more surprising is that they actually managed to squeeze quite a few features in such slim cases. The U300 comes with a 2.2 inch TFT display with a 240 x 320 pixel (QVGA) resolution and 70 MB internal memory, while the "crown jewel", U600 is available in sapphire blue, garnet red, platinum metal and copper gold and features a 3.1 megapixel camera, 2.2 inch TFT display with a 240 x 320 pixel (QVGA) resolution, Bluetooth for connectivity, 60MB internal memory and a MicroSD card slot for even more storage space for the user's files.
Ultra Edition 12.1(U700) is mostly appreciated for its HSPDA 3.6 Mbps data transfer speed, video calling and camera with autofocus all packed in a case that is just 12.1 thick, as its name suggests.
The slimmest of all, U100, is as Samsung says "thin enough to disappear if turned on its side", but still comes with a 3 megapixel camera, a 1.93 inch color TFT screen, a built-in music player and offers 11 hours of music playtime.
"We believe that the Samsung Ultra Edition II range completely embodies everything that today's consumers are seeking in a mobile in terms of unique design and flawless performance," said Geesung Choi, President of Samsung's Telecommunication Network Business. "We believe that the striking looks, exclusive feel and slim design of these devices, combined with uncompromised performance and function, will make the Ultra Edition II range an instant attraction to business users, fashion conscious consumers and multimedia enthusiasts."
As Samsung breaks down every size barrier out there when it comes to mobile phones, users will be able to pick some of them up starting March when all the new phones from the Ultra Edition II are expected to arrive in Europe.
