On Friday, mobile phone maker Samsung has announced that it managed to sell a number of more than 3 million Samsung Galaxy S devices in the United States.

The company launched its Android-based smartphone in the US back in summer, and made it available via all major carriers there, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, as well as via smaller operators, such as U.S. Cellular and Cellular South.

According to the company, the success its Galaxy S devices had on the US market proved of great help in its attempt to become the leading smartphone vendor on the market, a goal that it already managed to achieve.

Research firm Gartner has just announced that Samsung was the top Android smartphone provider in the US in terms of sales to end users during the third quarter of the ongoing year.

Gartner says that Samsung Mobile managed to account for 32.1 percent of the U.S. Android smartphone market during the time frame, marking an impressive increase when compared to the 9.2 percent on the same market that it accounted for in the fourth quarter of the last year.

“I want to personally thank everyone who selected a Galaxy S smartphone as their mobile handset of choice. Neither of these wonderful accomplishments would have been possible without the loyalty and support of our customers,” said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Mobile.

“The Galaxy S portfolio has played a significant role in Samsung’s success in 2010 and we are extremely excited to show you what products, services and innovations we have in store for the U.S. market in 2011.”

The Samsung Galaxy S handsets comes to the market with a brilliant 4-inch Super AMOLED display screen, beneath which there is a 1GHz Hummingbird application processor for enhanced performance levels.

Moreover, the mobile phone includes a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, as well as great connectivity options, and the company's Media Hub premium movie and TV programming download service.

According to Samsung, all of its Galaxy S devices are bound to receive an update to Android 2.2 Froyo in the near future.
